While we were in Rome we decided to visit Pompei for a day. Everyone who had been there told us we couldn't miss it! So we gave up a day in Rome (which was a very hard thing to do!) and made our way down to Naples...from there we caught a local train out to Pompei. Wow, it was amazing!!! What a place to visit! If anyone is thinking of maybe going...definitely do...you won't be sorry!
For those of you who don't know...Pompei was covered in volcanic ash back in 79 AD when Mt Vesuvias (you can see it in the pic here) erupted. The area has now been excavated and you can see some of how the people lived back then...
Unfortunately we didn't go on a tour but we did get to listen in to the occasional bit of a tour whenever an English speaking guide went past. We also met some nice people who told us some stuff from their guidebooks...
We found out that Pompei was a resort town for wealthy Romans which explains the extravagent temples, houses and other buildings. |
