We'll the VT team made their second run at a local sailing race Tuesday July 14th, 2009 as part of the Redondo Beach summer racing series. Our boat the 27' Impulse known only as, "Impulsive". There were two new additions to the team, myself and our new Product Manager Ben, in the mirrored "Shades".
After a couple of tacking practice runs we proceeded to the start line and got the wind bearings and the bearings of the start line 150 degrees. We patiently waited for the start and with just a few minutes to go got into position. Things got a little exciting when another boat tacked right in front of us and then came down right on top of our line. Cap'n Ken ducked below, but the other crew seemed even less experienced than us, and they proceeded to bump into us. Fortunately, Ben got his legs up in time and with 15 seconds to race time we quickly got back in focus. We were first across the line, and didn't see any early across flag, so off we went for the first way point.
Finally we raced downwind to the next way point, and were shocked to keep our lead. We were without a spinnaker type sail, and the others in our class all had one. See the photo below of the team on that passed us just after the second way point. Cap'n Ken fought them off valiantly at the way point, but to no avail. The spinnaker drove them on past us.
But Wait!.... whats this, we stayed close on their heels and as we entered the harbor they drop their spinnaker and we manage to slip by just seconds before the finish line.
And we crossed VICTORIOUS! and without a spinnaker... But wait... no horn! Could it be? We have been disqualified for crossing the start line early. Doomed again.
Fortunately, Cap'n Ken tells us that over early occasionally, "Just means we are trying hard."
- Pros:Redondo is a great little harbor to sail out of.
- Cons:The smell of the sea wall on the way out of the harbor.
- In a nutshell:Sailing is a blast, thanks Ken for the opportunity.
