Dresden, a beautiful German city that barely survived tragic and unnecessary bombings during World War II, is made up of the Altstadt (old town) and the Neustadt (new town). Contrary to the names, most of the Altstadt has been rebuilt since it's destruction, and most of the Neustadt survived the bombings and is made up of original buildings. The Altstadt, while packed with tourists and tour busses, is breathtakingly beautiful and deserves a good part of a day to take in all the sights. I spent quite a bit of time at the Zwinger palace, sitting in the courtyard while admiring the charred beauty. The Neustadt is the hip part of town where I had meals at wonderful cafes and browsed (and bought) in the friendly little shops. |

german_eagle Sun May 4, 2008 06:23 UTC Great tips! Didn't know the hotel Windsor. Yes, the second hand Goth shop is still there. |
