The Most Powerful (and popular) male in Washington,DC! We are a nation of immigrants, so this new-comer fits right in! Meet Tian Tian and his girlfriend, Mei Xiang at the National Zoo.
I've some travelogies for some of my favorite less-frequently visited attractions in DC - the zoo, the National Arboretum, the FDR Memorial, Rock Creek Park and Smithsonian Museums. Also, since VT has both a Washington and a District of Columbia page, I'm adding a travelogue on the Hillwood Museum on the WASHINGTON,DC page
If ever there is a city to capture the American spirit, and to make one proud of national monuments - this is it! There are so very many things to do that are FREE - just like our country! The Smithsonian museums, touring all those monuments, walking the mall, going to the zoo - all FREE! During cherry blossom time it is heavenly. If it was a mild winter, the blossoms start blooming the last days of March; a colder winter allows the blossoms to peak in early April. Most of us residents of the surrounding suburbs expect family and friends to visit during this time. It really is a perfect time to explore the beauty of a city more known for power. Ignore the political and enjoy the cultural atmoshphere. But if you go to the Kenndey center to catch the symphany or a play, you can see lots of politicians, sometimes sitting right beside you.
My travelogue on the National Arboretum features a world-class public garden! I was lucky to be able to volunteer as a gardener/helper there for years...they provided master-gardener classes and lots of on the job training. If you want to learn to garden I strongly suggest volunteering in a local public garden! Its a unique course in horticulture for free!

| | Cherry Blossom time The most popular time to visit DC is in springtime - the cherry blossoms are awesome! This is a major tourist season so the Tidal Basin area gets crowded, but it is well worth the effort to see! |

| | DC in Autumn Fall is my favorite time to visit the museums downtown. The air is crisp and clear, and colors are vibrant. DC is a beautiful place with tons of things to do. |
