The view

Placed on a hill the town dominates the landscape and the sea.
Behind Castiglione della Pescaia there is some beautiful countryside with small, green, wild hills and a unique swamp called Diaccia Botrona. You can see the pinewood forest that measures about 40 km in length.
In front of the the town there are the Islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. Giannutri is famous for an important Roman villa. The Island of Giglio is good for walking in perfect nature. Just in front of the Castle you can see the Island of Montecristo, famous for the book. The last is the biggest island: Elba.

The town

In origin Castiglione was a roman village situated along the Bruna river.
Subsequently, in the medieval time, the village moved on a side of the near hill, hidden from the eyes of the pirates. The old town is dominated by a particular castle, because it is structured on a triangular plant. You can walk in the narrow and steep streets but you can't visit the castle because is private house.
