Mercado do Pau: Handmade masks

Handmade masks can be bought everywhere on the streets in Maputo. And of course at Bazar Artesanato, the Saturday Market.

What to buy: I bought three small handmade masks and paid 100 Metacais for each (see first photo). The masks are handcrafted from wood. I think this is a special gift to give to friends back home.

Mercado Municipal: Mercado Municipal

Mercado Municipal is an indoor market in the Baixa area. The massive building was build by the Portuguese for more than 100 years ago.

It's quite hectic inside the building, and hustle and bustle between salesmen and customers. Especially in the morning around 7-10 a.m.

I heard that there are pickpocket and thieves here, but I didn't notice anything of that. The presence of Police near to this place is considerable.

What to buy: It is also called "the fish and vegetable market", but you can buy much more than that. All kinds of food and groceries, clothes, crafts. Right outside are the street sellers with their watches and sunglasses for sale.

What to pay: Some of the fruits are imported from South Africa, so don't expect cheap prices. But you can buy cheap clothes. Remember to bargain the price.
