Intriguing and Compelling History drew me in! Allow me to start by saying how vividly the Dolmabahce palace, although like all turkish words i cannot read, lingers in my memory. This palace is so fancy, there is actually a feeling of the palace 'trying too hard'. lol But Istanbul is at the hub of Asia, as well as Europe, and although it is a Muslim nation, you can find so many bars and disco to go shake your ass in, and although not all consider it, it is very european in many ways, thanks to the revolutionary reforms of Atiturk, the national hero whose death is perserved here.
In 1919 after WWI , this man was involved with liberating Turkey from the colonialist imperial chokehold that so many other former Ottoman Empire nations fell prey to, including Iraq. Atiturk rallied the proud turkish people in Istanbul to form his own government, while the fat cats in Paris were drawing colonial plans for turkey to make it a mandated domain of either britain, england and france. Atiturk had other plans and after moving the capital to a vague city called Ankara, sucesssfully gave his country the great gift of sovereignty. |
