In Transit

by cwest03 - last update: Aug 12, 2003

OK so I've only been to the Frankfurt airport but have never been into the city. I don't know if that counts as actually going to Frankfurt. My guess is no since just about every airport is just like any other.

The one thing that I like about airports is that you do get a small taste for the city and country that you're in. The magazines may be in a different language. The candy is different. You might be able to enjoy a local drink or kind of get a flavor for what the food might taste like. People around you might be speaking different languages too. I guess it's more of a teaser than anything.

We landed in the Frankfurt airport on the way to Paris from San Francisco. We arrived early in the morning but it could have been any time of day since we hadn't slept much on the trip over. The one thing that was nice is that the airport wasn't too full when we arrived. People were just getting to work and travelers were just starting to arrive when we got there.

The picture above was taken of one of the transit passageways that took us from our terminal to another part of the airport. The lights in this dimly lit tunnel slowly changed as calming music played in the background. The fact that we were tired made the experience all that more surreal. I kind of like it.

I like Germany a lot and have been there twice but have never gone to Frankfurt. I am told that it is more or less an industrial city with not much to see. I do however know that they have great music. I'm sure one of these days I'll make it there since I plan to go back to Germany and it is one of the major hubs for this country.

Pros:"I got a quick glimpse of what Frankfurt is like"
Cons:"Experiencing a city through its airport is like going to the zoo"
In A Nutshell:"It was better than nothing."
