I have been to Alcatraz several times growing up but never as an adult. Since my girlfriend has never been there we've decided to make a trip to this infamous island prison in the San Francisco Bay in a few weeks. After our trip I will have more tips and details to share.
The island (and prison) can be seen from many different vantage points throughout the city and can be reached by boat from Pier 41. This is a popular destination especially in the summer months so it is suggested that you reserve your tickets ahead of time on the web or by phone (see link below for details).
Being in the middle of the SF bay the weather on Alcatraz can go from clear to cold and foggy without warning. When making a trip to Alcatraz (or SF for that matter) it couldn't hurt to bring along a jacket.
