Crowne Plaza Sydney
by A Travelocity Traveler
Written Apr, 2007
Excellent location in central business district directly across the street from Darling Harbor, but otherwise an average hotel in all respects. Rooms are clean but plain. Service is friendly. Health club is tiny, but has the basics. Price, relative to other hotels in this area is reasonable. This... see more Travelocity Traveler reviews

Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour for New Year's Eve fireworks. Minimum of 3 days booking, and payment had to be made in full in August, ie 4 months in advance. Hotel could make a killing on the short term money market for that period. Had requested King Bed when we booked in May, ie 8 months earlier however, when we arrived in room, we found only a Queen bed. Reception were initially not interested in m complaint and would not acknowledge that I had booked a King. It was only when I pressed the issue and showed them the printed version of e-mail booking confirmation, they agreed and advised they were unable to offer King as booked, however reluctantly offered buffet breakfasts in lieu. Good view of Darling Harbour, and only 10 mins walk downhill to Sydney Harbour to view fireworks.

Unique Qualities:
The big plus in its favour is its location. There are many alternative hotels close by, some better, some not as good. It's on the city side of Darling Harbour, so it's an easy walk to the attractions of Darling Harbour itself, to Chinatown and to the Opera House and harbour.

The Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour was within walking distance to the very touristy, Darling Harbour, Chinatown, and Botanical Gardens. So there's a lot to see and do without having to worry about transportation. It was also a short and inexpensive ferry ride away from the other must see tourist spot, the Rocks, close to the the Sydney Opera House (but you can actually walk it if you're willing for about 20-25 minutes). Right across the street is a 24-hour convenience store where you can load up on drinks and snacks so you don't have to pay for the mini-bar. That store also has internet access for $2/hour. Besides location, the Concierge service was AWESOME, very helpful, and full of information. The whole staff was cool.

Never used the facilites, but the hotel did have a gym, but not sure about a pool. Lots of construction going on, so the view is obscured by contruction equipment, but what it lacks in views, it more than makes up for in customer service and location. Also, this hotel looks like it's used by a lot of business people, so if you're allergic to suits and tie, then this place may not be for you because you'll see a lot of "business types," but my friends and I went in, backpack, jeans and all, and no one blinked an eye or gave us a disapproving look.
